When time is of the essence, it’s great to have a few go-to recipes stashed away. You know, the kind of meals that practically make themselves because you only need a few simple ingredients and very little time to prepare them? Baking fish is one of the simplest (and healthiest) ways to prepare it. You can have a great seafood dinner on the table after just 15–20 minutes in the oven, a short marinade, or some spice.

Spicy Sheet-Pan Salmon, one of our most popular baked fish dishes, is making a comeback for American Heart Month. Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, which can help reduce inflammation and lower the risk of heart disease, among other health advantages. Chillies contain a compound called capsaicin, which has been shown to reduce inflammation. That’s why eating a portion of this sriracha-glazed fish is like getting two heart-healthy meals in one!

We use Sriracha more often than any other condiment. Anytime we want a little extra heat, we sprinkle it on top of our favourite seafood dips, spicy tuna wraps, or shrimp Bloody Marys. Flavor-wise, it stands on its own two feet because of the combination of chiles, garlic, vinegar, sugar, and salt. The addition of honey and fresh garlic make this glaze everything from the plain.

This delicious salmon is cooked in a single sheet pan and is perfect for a quick weeknight meal. Serve it with brown rice and wilted greens for a heart-healthy main dish. Ideal for Valentine’s Day, yet easy enough for any day of the year, I say, “Why not try it tonight?”

Spicy Sheet-Pan Salmon

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Serves: 4 people

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 lb. salmon, cut into 4 fillets
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1-2 Tbsp. sriracha
  • 1 garlic clove, minced

Instructions:

  1. Turn oven temperature up to 425° Fahrenheit. Spread 1/2 tsp of olive oil on a baking sheet, then add the salmon fillets. The last half teaspoon of olive oil should be drizzled atop the fish.
  2. Combine the honey, sriracha sauce, and garlic in a small bowl and stir to combine.
  3. Spread it evenly over the salmon fillets.
  4. Cook in the oven for 15 minutes.

Salmon Cooking Tips:

  1. There isn’t a long cooking time associated with salmon. If you want to avoid overcooking salmon, you need to account for the fact that it will continue to cook for a while after you remove it from the oven or grill.
  2. Check the doneness of your fish with a fork. If the fillet flakes easily, it’s ready to be served. A food thermometer is another option for determining when something is cooked. A well-cooked piece of salmon will have an internal temperature of 145° Fahrenheit.
